Gauchos Swept by No. 14 Cal, 7-0

BERKELEY, Calif. – UCSB men's tennis had another tough road outing Sunday afternoon as they dropped their match to No. 14 California, 7-0 at the Hellman Tennis Complex in Berkeley. The Gauchos were edged in the doubles competition and swept in singles as they fell to 3-6 on the season while the Bears improved to 9-3 overall.

UCSB's match at Cal started off on a positive note as sophomore Morgan Mays and junior Andrew Riminton dominated Filip Bergevi and Billy Griffith, 6-1 en route to their fifth consecutive doubles victory.

However, Cal's nationally ranked doubles pairings won their matches at the No. 1 and No. 2 courts to capture the doubles point for the Bears. No. 32 Andre Goransson and Oskar Wikberg defeated junior Nathan Eshmade and sophomore Erik Johnsson 6-3 at No. 2 doubles while Gaucho seniors Ziad Sultan and Tobias Galskov were bested by No. 30 Gregory Bayane and Chase Melton, 6-4 at the No. 1 court.

The Bears never gave the lead after clinching the doubles point and went on to sweep the singles competition, though the Gauchos kept several matches close.

Freshman Cody Rakela won his first set against Gregory Bayane at No. 3 singles but the Cal senior battled back to eventually win 4-6, 6-4, 6-2.

Eshmade was also victorious in the first set of his match at No. 4 singles but was downed by Billy Griffith 3-6, 6-4, 6-3.

Galskov battled to keep his match alive at No. 1 singles against No. 42-ranked Andre Goransson and won the tiebreak 9-7 in the second set of his match but Goransson defeated the Gaucho senior to close out the 7-0 Bears victory.

The Gauchos will return to the courts on Monday, March 2 when they host No. 45 Oregon at the Rec Cen Courts. Play is set to begin at 1:00 pm.
