Gauchos Fall to No. 49 Oregon, Look Ahead to NCAA National Indoor Championships

EUGENE, Ore. – The No. 54 UCSB Men's Tennis team ended its first road trip of the season this afternoon falling to No. 49 Oregon by a final score of 7-0. The Gauchos will return home to prepare for their next challenge ahead this weekend, the NCAA National Indoor Championships.

With this loss, Santa Barbara moves to a record of 1-2 on the season.

In doubles play, the Ducks gave themselves a 1-0 lead taking the first two matches on courts one and two. Although Oregon had sealed the doubles point, the Gauchos found an answer on court three as Nicolas Moreno de Alboran and Chase Masciorini took a 7-5 victory over the duo of Cormac Clissold and Thomas Laurent.

In singles play the Gauchos were humbled as the Ducks swept the field, but Santa Barbara did not go down easily forcing tiebreakers in the second set on courts one and three. On one, Morgan Mays grinded to force a third set, but was defeated 7-0 in the break by Thomas Laurent. Nicolas Moreno de Alboran added his efforts on court three, but fell is his break 7-4 to Simon Stevens.

Courts five and six were a bright spot for the Gauchos as both Cody Rakela and Anders Holm battled to second set victories to force third and final tie-breaker to end the match. The Gauchos hung tight, but the Ducks remained perfect as Rakela fell to Cormac Clissold 10-6 and Holm was defeated Ethan Young-Smith by a slim margin of 13-11.

Santa Barbara looks ahead to Saturday's competition as they will fly to Athens, Georgia to face the hosting No. 7 Bulldogs in the first round of the NCAA Indoor Championships.
