SANTA BARBARA, Calif.- Following a 4-3 heartbreaker last weekend to the University of Oregon, the UCSB men's tennis team fell short in another tough match today against ninth-ranked Baylor 4-3.
The Gauchos are currently on a two-game skid holding a record of 6-4. Out of their four losses Santa Barbara has all fallen to ranked opponents including No. 7 Cal, No. 11 UCLA, and Baylor today.
Although having a few close losses the Gauchos are playing at a high level of tennis. As a team, UC Santa Barbara has had success in doubles going 9-2 on the season. The Gauchos started off today's match with a quality win as Senior Morgan Mays and Simon Freund defeated No. 57 Will Little and Constantin Frantzen of Baylor 6-3 pushing their unbeaten streak to 8-0.
The Gauchos got off to a promising start winning their first set in singles play however it was not enough to offset a talented Bear team featuring three nationally ranked players in No. 15 Juan Benitez, No. 35 Max Tchoutakian, and No. 81 Johannes Schretter. Baylor's trio of ranked singles players defeated three Gauchos. Morgan Mays was defeated by No. 15 Juan Benitez 6-3, 6-3. After winning the first set 3-6, Nicolas Moreno fell short to Baylor's No. 35 Maxime Tchoutakian 3-6, 6-2, 6-1. UCSB eventually fell 4-3.
With support from Gauchos fans, Simon Freund was defeated in a competitive match against Baylor's No. 81 Johannes Schretter 6-2, 6-4.
Santa Barbara has another home match tomorrow against the New Mexico University Lobos at 1:30pm on the RecCen Tennis Courts.
