Gauchos Shut Out on Day Two of Mary Nutter Classic

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. – On the second day of the 2018 Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic, the UC Santa Barbara softball team was held scoreless in a pair of games, falling 11-0 to No. 23 Cal before being edged 3-0 to Sacramento State later in the afternoon.

Game 1

In the first game of the day, the Gauchos (5-4) went up against Cal for the second time this season. Last weekend, UCSB dropped a 2-0 pitcher's duel to the Golden Bears. Sunday would be a different story, however, as Cal racked up 11 runs, including seven in the seventh inning alone.

The Gauchos were held to just four hits at the plate with two coming from Melanie Menor and one apiece from Sierra Altmeyer and Rayna Cohen.

Felisha Noriega (2-3) was tagged with the loss after tossing all seven innings and allowing 11 runs, six of which were earned, while striking out three and walking four.

Kamalani Dung (4-0) tossed the complete game shutout for Cal.

Game 2

The second game of the afternoon featured another familiar opponent as UCSB squared off against Sacramento State twice at the Capital City Kick-Off last weekend, winning both meetings. The Hornets got their redemption Sunday with a 3-0 shutout victory, holding the Gauchos to just four hits at the plate for the second straight game.

Sacramento State brought a run across in the second and then used a pair of RBI doubles in the fifth to take a 3-0 lead and Celina Matthias (3-1) picked up the win after throwing the complete game shutout with seven strikeouts.

Veronika Gulvin (1-2) got the loss after pitching six innings, scattering 12 hits, allowing three runs and striking out five.

Maci Fines, Sammy Fabian, Alyssa Diaz and Altmeyer all went 1-for-3 at the plate for UCSB.

The Gauchos conclude tournament action tomorrow with another doubleheader beginning 11:00 a.m. against Utah followed by a 1:30 p.m. game against Loyola Marymount.
