Gauchos Dispatched in Road Finale

Box Score

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – The UC Santa Barbara Gauchos softball team wrapped up their final series away from home with a five-inning 14-0 run-rule loss at the Amy S. Harrison Stadium in Riverside on Sunday. The Gauchos (18-33, 5-13 Big West) had previously lost the first two games of the series in their Saturday doubleheader against the UC Riverside Highlanders (32-20, 9-9 Big West) 13-11 and 9-3, respectively.

Sophomore designated player Genesis Ramirez picked up the first hit of the game in the top of the first inning and junior first baseman Sierra Altmeyer was walked in the next at bat, but both were left stranded.

Sophomore third baseman Kayla Krantz, returning from injury in this weekend's series, picked up another single in the next inning.

Playing shortstop in this affair, freshman Maci Fines singled in the third inning and picked up her fourth stolen base this season. Ramirez and Altmeyer reached base via walks but were once again left on base.

In the top of the fifth inning, freshman right-fielder Alyssa Lazatin also earned a base on balls, freshman centerfielder Sammy Fabian reached base via a fielder's choice, and Ramirez capped off her 2-for-2 day with another single.

Riverside put two runs on the board in both the first and second innings and tacked on six and four more runs in the following two innings, winning the tilt via the run-rule without having to bat in the bottom of the fifth.

Sophomore pitcher Felisha Noriega started in the circle for the Gauchos and took the loss to drop to 6-7 on the year. Junior Veronika Gulvin and senior Lena Mayer appeared in relief. Riverside's Tayler Misfeldt earned the win to improve to 17-10.

The Gauchos head back home to Campus Diamond next weekend looking to snap their five-game losing streak in their last series of the season against Cal Poly. First pitch of game one on Friday is at 3:00 p.m., and Saturday's doubleheader games begin at 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m.
