Box Score IRVINE, Calif. – For the first time in the last four meetings between the UC Santa Barbara women's basketball team and UC Irvine, the Gauchos claimed victory at the Anteaters' home court, improving to 2-1 in Big West play with a 65-61 win over the league's preseason favorite on Thursday night at the Bren Events Center.
Ila Lane posted her conference-leading tenth double-double of the season with a 20-point, 16-rebound performance, Danae Miller matched her season-high of eight assists, Coco Miller added seven more, and Mira Shulman delivered a career-high 10 points off the bench as UCSB improved to 7-9 on the season.
"If you're going to fold at the first sign of adversity, you're not going to have success no matter what you do. We're starting to be able to answer to that. We were that team early [this season]. Now, we tell ourselves to regroup, stay in it, make adjustments- overall, we have grown there," said UCSB head coach Bonnie Henrickson after the game.
UCSB and UC Irvine paced each other throughout the first five minutes of play, matching each other with five points. However, Irvine ended the quarter on a 10-5 run, ending on an Alexus Seaton jumper with six seconds remaining, to take the 15-10 lead.
Whatever was drawn up on the board in the short time between quarters ended up working to immediate success as the Gauchos struck back on an 8-0 run, but it was short-lived as Irvine did the same and restored its five-point lead by the end of the quarter, leading 23-18.
Irvine found its groove in the third quarter, leaping out to a 37-25 lead in the first five and a half minutes of play, but Shulman, a walk-on junior guard, hit back-to-back triples as she went on a solo 8-2 run to bring the Gauchos back within six with two minutes left in the period.
Coco Miller and Lane continued it to make it a one-possession game, with Irvine's lead having shrunk to 39-36.
However, the Anteaters again would have the last laugh at the end of a quarter, as senior guard Lauren Saiki hit a jumper with just a second left on the clock to again put Irvine up by five.
The fourth quarter was dominated by Lane's prowess in the paint, as the freshman center caught and shot her way to 17 points and six rebounds in one of the best single-quarter performances by a Gaucho since the rule change to four quarters in 2015, to which Irvine had no answer as UCSB won its first true road game of the season.
The Gauchos head further south to UC Riverside on Saturday night to take on the Highlanders. In the two teams' most recent meeting, UCSB defeated UC Riverside at home late last season to clinch its spot in the Big West Tournament. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. A live audio broadcast will be available on UCSBGauchos.com with Steve Granado on play-by-play.
