Sahar's Huge Fourth Quarter Helps Gauchos Grab Road Win at CSUN, 65-55

Box Score

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. – Big nights from redshirt senior guard Tal Sahar and freshman center Ila Lane gave the UC Santa Barbara women's basketball team (10-14, 5-6 Big West) its third road win of the season in a 65-55 victory over CSUN (9-15, 4-6 Big West) on Saturday night at the Matadome.

Sahar led the team in scoring with 18 points and went 3-for-4 in the fourth quarter from beyond the arc, while Lane scored 16 points and brought down 17 boards, including seven on the offensive glass. Junior point guard Danae Miller added 14 points, helped by a perfect 6-for-6 showing at the free throw line. Redshirt senior guard Coco Miller had eight assists on the night.

Danae Miller and Coco Miller opened with the first two makes of the game before CSUN went on an 8-0 run that lasted into the first quarter media timeout.

After the short break, UCSB quickly made up the difference and tied the game up at 11-11 off a Coco Miller layup.

Both teams kept it close until a pair of Danae Miller free throws signaled the beginning of a 10-2 Gaucho run, ending with a triple from the Carson, Calif. native that put the Gauchos up 30-20 with 2:45 left in the half.

CSUN went to work on reducing the deficit before the intermission, getting it down to six before Sahar drained a three-pointer with just over half a minute left, getting the Gauchos into the locker room up 33-24.

Santa Barbara's offense stalled in the first minutes of the third quarter, held scoreless for the first five minutes of the quarter as the Matadors got themselves back within three.

Lane finally got UCSB going with back-to-back layups, getting the lead back up to 37-30, but CSUN wasn't going to go down without a fight as the third quarter ended with a slim 42-40 Gaucho lead.

It was when CSUN got within one after a made Hayley Tanabe free throw that Sahar got in rhythm. She found herself open in the corner with just over eight minutes left in regulation when she made her first triple, and she followed that up with another after two failed Matador possessions.

Her third trey gave the Gauchos a double-digit lead, putting them up 53-43 with 5:26 left, a lead they wouldn't surrender as they earned their fifth conference victory.

"We put it into practice yesterday. We tried to tweak some things to get Ila off the block and that's where we had [Sahar's] looks there. It was about getting Ila moving, out of the paint, and from there, it's about navigating who's going to take the corner. Really good execution- Coco's the passer on two of them and Lauren [Lee] threw one too," said head coach Bonnie Henrickson of Sahar's opportunities in the fourth quarter.

The Gauchos have a pair of home games this week at the Thunderdome, beginning with CSUN on Thursday night at 7 p.m. before seeing UC Riverside at 2 p.m. on Saturday. Tickets for both matchups are available on UCSBGauchos.com.
