Quality Pitching Sees Gauchos Win Two at Susan Craig Classic

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Solid performances from a trio of pitchers helped the UC Santa Barbara softball team wrap up its stay at the 2020 Susan Craig Classic with wins over Northern Colorado, 2-0, and New Mexico, 7-2, on Sunday afternoon at Lobo Softball Field.

UCSB 2, Northern Colorado 0

Senior Felisha Noriega and sophomore Alyssa Molina combined for seven shutout innings in the circle, allowing just two hits and striking out four batters as the Gauchos claimed their second victory of the weekend against Northern Colorado.

The Gauchos were held to only four hits themselves, but they had the two that won the game in the bottom of the third inning.

After freshman shortstop Korie Thomas drew a walk and then advanced to second on a sac bunt, junior left fielder Sammy Fabian drilled a double to right center to score Thomas for the game's first run, though Fabian was put out at third base from the throw from the outfield.

In the following at-bat, junior centerfielder Rayna Cohen hammered the ball over the fence in right center, putting the Gauchos ahead 2-0 with the third home run of the weekend and of the season.

Fabian recorded another hit and a walk to finish the game 2-for-2, and redshirt senior first baseman Sierra Altmeyer had the other hit for the Gauchos.

UCSB 7, New Mexico 2

The Gauchos secured a winning record in their run of games at the Susan Craig Classic with a win in their final game against tournament host New Mexico.

Altmeyer got things started in the first inning with a sac fly that brought in Fabian across the plate.

Two innings later, sophomore right fielder Ally Nodohara hit a two-run home run, scoring senior third baseman Kayla Krantz in the process.

A Gaucho fielding error gave the Lobos their first run of the game in the bottom of the fourth, but sophomore catcher Teah Thies provided the response with an RBI single in the sixth to get the Gauchos up 4-1.

In the bottom half of the frame, the Lobos scored another via an RBI double from shortstop Cameryn O'Grady, but UCSB made that point moot with the addition of three runs in the seventh, thanks to an RBI sac fly from Nodohara and a two-run homer from Altmeyer.

Sophomore pitcher Emily Schuttish earned her second win of the season after pitching all seven innings, allowing five hits, giving up two earned runs, and striking out four on 127 pitches.

The Gauchos head to Fresno this week for the Fresno State Invitational, beginning on Thursday at 6 p.m. with a matchup against Fresno State. UCSB will play in six games, playing on through to Sunday morning. Live stats for all games will be available on UCSBGauchos.com.
