Seniors' Thunderdome Farewell Ends on High Note in 55-47 Defeat of Long Beach State

Box Score

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – The UC Santa Barbara women's basketball team (13-15, 8-7 Big West) completed its regular season home schedule with a decisive win over Long Beach State (11-16, 6-8 Big West) on Saturday afternoon at the Thunderdome.

Freshman center and NCAA total rebounds leader Ila Lane led the Gauchos with her 19th double-double of the year, tallying 20 points and 20 rebounds, her third 20-20 performance of the season.

UCSB enjoyed a strong start to the game. Following Long Beach State's game-opening three-point play from Shanaijah Davison, the Gauchos went on a dominant 24-2 run that spanned all the way to the end of the first quarter.

Though a three-pointer from the Beach's Justina King gave the visitors the final points of the frame, UCSB held them to just 3-of-14 from the field in the early going.

The pace slowed dramatically in the second quarter, with UCSB outscoring Long Beach 9-8 as each team locked down on the other.

The hosts held a 32-17 halftime lead after Lane put together one of her strongest first halves in Big West play, dropping 11 points and securing 10 boards to lock up the double-double by the intermission. Redshirt senior guard Tal Sahar was just behind her with eight points, including two treys.

The third quarter was once again a back and forth affair. The Gauchos started off on a 9-2 run, but Long Beach ended the quarter by scoring the final six points, but UCSB still led 45-27 as the game transitioned into the final frame.

Despite the hefty Santa Barbara lead, a physical tone defined the fourth quarter. Long Beach State implemented a full court press early in the quarter, finding success early on. However, the Gauchos' lead would prove insurmountable.

The final minute of the game was eventful as Lane grabbed her 20th rebound of the game with 49 seconds left to wrap up her second 20-20 game of February and the senior trio of Sahar, Coco Miller, and Celeste Salazar, who were honored in a postgame ceremony, checked out for the final time at the Thunderdome.

Santa Barbara held Long Beach to 29.5% from the field on just 18 made shots, the lowest shooting percentage an opponent has registered against UCSB this season.

The Gauchos head to Hawai'i for their final game of the regular season next Wednesday. UCSB's battle with the Rainbow Wahine tips off at 9 p.m. Pacific Time. The game can be viewed on BigWest.TV, listened to on UCSBGauchos.com with Sports Information Director Arthur Wilkie on the call, and tracked on UCSBGauchos.com via the live stats link on the women's basketball schedule page.
