UCSB Crushes CSUN in Near Record-Breaking Fashion, 105-58

Box Score

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. – UC Santa Barbara jumped out to leads of 5-0 and 12-2 and never looked back, crushing CSUN on Friday afternoon, 105-58, for its fifth straight win.

The 47-point margin of victory equaled the largest ever in a Big West game for the Gauchos (9-3 overall, 3-2 Big West), a record also set on Mar. 12, 2012, in a 90-43 win over UC Davis. This also marked the first time the team has scored 100+ points in a conference game since a 113-103 overtime loss at New Mexico State on Mar. 4, 1995, and it was also the most points against an NCAA Division 1 opponent since Nov. 30, 1985 when they defeated United States International University, 109-101.

UCSB (9-3 overall, 3-2 Big West) made its first five three-point attempts and finished the first half at 6-of-12, taking a 47-28 lead at the break. JaQuori McLaughlin, who finished with 21 points and made 5-of-8 three-point attempts, made his first three from long distance to set the tone.

The Matadors (5-5, 1-2) never got closer than eight points (12-4) the rest of the way.

UCSB didn't let up in the second half. When CSUN's Vante Hendrix made a three-point basket with 16:47 remaining, it cut the lead to 56-37, but another three-pointer by McLaughlin sparked a 12-0 run to push the advantage to 68-37 at the 14:06 mark.

A Lance Coleman three ended the 12-0 run, but the Gauchos weren't finished, exploding for another 10-0 run that was capped by a three-pointer by Ajare Sanni, stretching the advantage to 78-40.

A brief 5-0 surge by CSUN made it a 78-45 game, but another huge run, this one 13-0, helped UCSB more than double the score at 91-45. The rest was academic.

The Gauchos were led by McLaughlin with his 21 points. He also had three assists and four steals. Robinson Idehen and Josh Pierre-Louis each added 14 points, Sanni had 13 and Amadou Sow finished with 11. Sow also had 10 rebounds for his third straight double-double.

Devearl Ramsey added eight points, a game-high seven assists, no turnovers and three steals. He made 2-of-3 shots from three-point range, both during the decisive first half.

As a team, UCSB shot 60.9% for the game while limiting CSUN to 36.7. The Gauchos also hit 11-of-19 three-point attempts, 57.9%, while limiting their opponents to 6-of-25. Led by Sow, Santa Barbara won the battle of the boards, 42-25.

As a team, UCSB had 22 assists, just nine turnovers and a season-high 15 steals, equaling the sixth most in school history.

The Matadors were led by T.J. Starks with 29 points.

The Gauchos and CSUN will play again on Saturday at the Matadome with tip-off once again scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
