Smith Makes Six Saves as Gauchos Earn a Point in Hawai'i

WAIPAHU, Hawai'i – The UC Santa Barbara women's soccer team (4-6-3, 2-1-1 Big West) picked up its third result in four Big West Conference games played this season with a 0-0 double overtime draw against Hawai'i on Sunday night at Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Both teams got plenty of offense going in the first half, with Hawai'i outshooting UCSB 6-5 but forcing five saves out of the Gauchos' junior goalkeeper Evann Smith.
  • The Rainbow Wahine exercised more control over the second half, putting up three shots to the Gauchos' one.
  • UCSB came out firing in the first overtime, with senior defender Emma Vanderhyden and freshman midfielder O'Callahan Liu recording shots, and senior defender Elise Ziem coming closest to becoming the hero for the Gauchos but hitting the crossbar on a shot in the 100th minute.
  • Neither team managed to break the deadlock in the second overtime and the game finished as a scoreless draw.

NOTABLE

  • Smith made six saves in the game for the blue and gold.
  • The Gaucho defense earned its fifth clean sheet of the campaign.
