SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – The UC Santa Barbara men's soccer team (6-3-3, 2-0-1 Big West) drew UC Irvine 1-1 after a double overtime battle on Wednesday night at Harder Stadium.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- In the 11th minute, senior forward Ameyawu Muntari played a corner toward the far post, finding junior forward Thaabit Baartman who met the ball with his head, but it traveled across the mouth of goal back to Muntari. The Ghanaian crossed it back to the far post, looking again for Baartman, who buried it with his right foot at the second time of asking.
- With less than 30 seconds to go before the end of regulation, Oscar Cervantes drilled a ball into the box, where Jake Means headed it into goal past UCSB sophomore goalkeeper Leroy Zeller.
- Both teams had their chances in the two overtime periods. UCSB sophomore striker Finn Ballard McBride had a one-on-one with UC Irvine goalkeeper Gordon Botterill in the 95th minute, but the goalkeeper managed to make a save to keep the game alive for the visitors.
- In the 104th minute, Cervantes rattled the crossbar before the ball trickled in front of the goal line into the path of Means, who forced Zeller to make a reaction save.
