SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – The UC Santa Barbara women's basketball team fell in its penultimate Big West Conference regular season contest against Cal Poly, with the Mustangs winning 76-46 on Friday night at the Mott Athletics Center.
The Mustangs (12-9, 8-7 Big West) outscored the Gauchos 28-14 (6-13, 6-9 Big West) in the paint and scored 19 points off turnovers to claim the victory, locking UCSB into the seventh seed at next week's Big West Conference Tournament. Senior point guard Danae Miller scored 12 points for UCSB on five makes, while junior forward Taylor Mole scored nine and added seven rebounds. Freshman guard Anya Choice finished with four assists.
Cal Poly was in control of the game early on, breaking away from what was a 6-4 deficit with a string of Kirsty Brown, Maddie Willett, and Abbey Ellis makes that comprised an 11-0 run that lasted until the end of the first quarter.
In the second quarter, the Mustangs continued to extend their lead, boasting an advantage of 21 right before halftime before Choice drilled a three with 13 seconds left before the break as Cal Poly led 38-20.
After the intermission, the hosts continued building up to their eventual 30-point margin of victory by outscoring the Gauchos by six in both the third and fourth quarters.
With the loss, UCSB will be the seventh seed at the upcoming Big West Tournament and will face the second seed, either UC Irvine or UC Davis, on Wednesday.
