SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - The UC Santa Barbara men's soccer team produced a 1-1 draw against Cal in double overtime on Sunday night at Harder Stadium.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- In the 19th minute, Cal goalkeeper Chris Gustini launched a ball forward to the Gauchos' half from just beyond his penalty area, catching forward Wyatt Meyer ahead of the UCSB backline through onto goal, where he managed to nestle the ball off his left foot into the bottom right corner of the frame.
- The Gauchos wouldn't manage to tie the game until the 73rd minute, when junior forward Thaabit Baartman hit a low free kick that was parried by Gustini towards his left post, where senior centerback William Gillingham pounced on it to score his first goal of the season.
- Each team would come close to winning it late in regulation: UCSB goalkeeper Leroy Zeller was forced to make a save on a high-powered shot from Cal's Christopher Grey in the 84th minute, and Gaucho senior attacker Ameyawu Muntari nearly made his magic happen again with just seconds to go until full time, but was blocked by the Cal defense.
- Neither team could find the winner in 20 minutes of overtime, bringing the game to a close with a 1-1 scoreline.
