HAMILTON, N.Y. – Freshman forward and Santa Barbara native Rene Pacheco found the back of the net off a spilled rebound from a Henry Davies shot with less than four minutes to go in double overtime as the UC Santa Barbara men's soccer team defeated Colgate 1-0 at Beyer-Small Field on Friday night.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Gauchos dominated from the outset, putting up eleven shots in the first half and six in the second period of play. Aside from forcing Colgate goalkeeper Nick Gerlach to make eight saves, the blue and gold also hit the post on three separate occasions. Redshirt freshman defender Lucas Gonzalez hit the crossbar in the 33rd minute, senior defender William Gillingham had a shot come in contact with the post rather than the goal in the 82nd, and freshman forward Salvador Aguilar suffered the same fate in the 99th minute right before the end of the first overtime period.
  • UCSB sophomore goalkeeper Leroy Zeller came up with a massive save for the Gauchos with seconds to go before halftime, keeping Bobby Foose's free kick from finding the back of the net for the Raiders.
  • Less than a minute into the second overtime, Zeller again came up big for UCSB with a close-range save on Max Edelstein as he nearly ended the game for the Raiders.
  • In the 107th minute, junior center back Henry Davies received a pass from sophomore midfielder Nemo Philipp at the top of the box on the left side with his back turned to goal, from where he turned and tested Gerlach with a curled right-footed effort, which the Raiders' goalkeeper parried to his left, where Pacheco was well-positioned to take advantage and tap in the game-winning goal, his second of the season.

NOTABLE

  • The win is UCSB's first away win against an east coast opponent in the regular season since Sept. 11, 2015 at Yale.
  • Head coach Tim Vom Steeg went seven deep on the bench in the contest, calling upon junior midfielder Sam Fletcher, sophomore defender Jorge Aldana, senior forward Rigoberto Barraagan, Pacheco, freshman defender Caden Vom Steeg, Aguilar, and sophomore midfielder Nemo Philipp.
  • UCSB outshot Colgate 21-8 and led the way 9-6 in shots on target.

QUOTABLE

  • "[Pacheco] put himself in a really good position to get a rebound on the goal. It's great to have him on the field after coming back from his injury and to have a local Santa Barbara talent producing for us." – Tim Vom Steeg on Pacheco
  • "We played really well in the first half but didn't do well on set pieces. Some of the best chances you can get are when it's early in the game and the opposing team hasn't found its rhythm yet, but we weren't able to capitalize on that. After that, they started believing in themselves and started playing harder, especially in the circumstance of it being alumni weekend and an otherwise emotional night, they stayed in the game and dumped balls into the box, and you have to give credit to Leroy Zeller for making two big saves for us." – Tim Vom Steeg on the flow of the game
  • "We have a team that has played from behind in three games this season, and just now had to battle for 106 minutes to win. You don't know what kind of team you have until you get yourself in these types of situations." – Tim Vom Steeg on the Gauchos' resolve throughout the 2021 campaign so far

NEXT UP

  • The Gauchos stay in New York and travel to Ithaca on Sunday at 4:00 p.m. Pacific Time to face Cornell at Berman Field. The game will be broadcast on ESPN+ and live stats will be available on UCSBGauchos.com.
