Gauchos Falter in 2OT Against No. 12 LMU

Box Score

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – The UC Santa Barbara men's soccer team (3-3-1) suffered a heartbreaking defeat in double overtime for the second game in a row, losing to 12th-ranked LMU 1-0 on Friday night at Harder Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Gauchos had some excellent chances throughout the game, most notably senior center back William Gillingham's double chance in the 28th minute, his first effort saved by LMU goalkeeper Jacob Jackson before it was parried back into the New Zealander's path, but was sent over the crossbar off target.
  • Sophomore attacker Finn Ballard McBride had an opportunity late in the 87th minute, picking up the ball on the right side of the penalty area before placing his attempt high over the goal.
  • LMU won the game on a corner kick in the 108th minute after a yellow card stoppage, with Christian Wood delivering the in-swinging corner to Nick Dauchot, who headed it in for the Lions to remain undefeated in 2021.

NOTABLE

  • The game saw eight yellow cards assigned, five to LMU and three to UCSB.
  • Sophomore goalkeeper Leroy Zeller made five saves in the loss.

QUOTABLE

  • "The disappointment comes because I think we did enough to win tonight... There were moments where we just needed the goal, and I didn't feel like there was any point, except for the second half where it opened up, that we wouldn't be able to win tonight's game." – UCSB head coach Tim Vom Steeg on the loss to LMU.
