SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – The UC Santa Barbara women's soccer team (3-5-2, 1-0-0 Big West) scored late to hold off UC Riverside 1-0 in the Big West Conference opener for both teams on Thursday night at Harder Stadium.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- UC Riverside's Jazmine Mendez led Alexandra Hargrave on a through ball, which Hargrave buried into the bottom right corner of the UCSB goal to give the visitors a lead in the 13th minute.
- Freshman defender Shaye Douglas helped the Gauchos respond in the 26th minute, scoring on a headed assist from freshman midfielder Sophia Vivar.
- The Gauchos won the game in the 87th minute on an excellent sequence from Vivar to Douglas to senior defender Emma Vanderhyden, who put a sensational right-footed effort in the back of the net to win the game for the blue and gold.
NOTABLE
- UCSB junior goalkeeper Evann Smith made five saves in the win.
- The Gauchos matched the Highlanders in the shot count 7-7.
- The game featured 29 total fouls, 16 for UCSB, 13 for UC Riverside.
- The win was the first for the Gauchos in which they didn't manage to shut out their opponents.
- Vanderhyden was issued a yellow card in the 32nd minute of the contest.
