LA JOLLA, Calif. – The UC Santa Barbara men's water polo team started its 2021 campaign with wins over LMU and Occidental in the first day of the 2021 Triton Invitational on Saturday at Canyonview Aquatic Center.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Game one: No. 6 UCSB 14, No. 16 LMU 7
- Senior attacker Sawyer Rhodes scored four of his five goals in the first half of play as UCSB progressed to a comfortable 8-3 lead at halftime.
- The Gauchos widened the gap in the third quarter to a 12-5 advantage, thanks to goals from Rhodes, junior attacker Sam Nangle, and senior attacker Leo Yuno.
- Senior attacker Cole Brosnan also had a hat trick for the Gauchos, adding his third goal in the fourth period of play as the blue and gold closed out the win.
Game two: No. 6 UCSB 24, Occidental 5
- The Gauchos thoroughly controlled their matchup against Occidental from start to finish, keeping the Tigers from scoring more than one goal in every period except the third, in which UCSB allowed two to connect with the back of the cage.
- Rhodes, Nangle, and freshman driver Adam Gyenis put together hat tricks in the second game of the day, helping the Gaucho offense score eight goals in both the second and fourth quarters of play.
NEXT UP
- UCSB concludes its run at the 2021 Triton Invitational with matchups against Pomona-Pitzer and UCLA on Sunday. The game against the Sagehens will begin at 9:20 a.m., while the matchup against the Bruins will start at 1:50 p.m.
