STANFORD, Calif. – The UC Santa Barbara men's soccer team fell behind in the fourth minute, gave up a second goal shortly after halftime, but still nearly found its way back on level terms thanks to a Thaabit Baartman goal in the 80th minute and a flurry of attacks in the final minutes of the contest, though they were eventually beaten 2-1 by No. 12 Stanford on Monday night at Cagan Stadium.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Stanford's Zach Ryan scored his second goal of the season on a cross from Ousseni Bouda on the right wing in the fourth minute, putting Stanford ahead 1-0.
- Shortly after the halftime break in the 50th minute, Bouda added to his assist with his own second goal of the year as he took a shot that deflected off a UCSB defender into goal.
- The Gauchos had several chances in the second half and they finally had one hit the back of the net when sophomore attacker Finn Ballard McBride set up junior forward Thaabit Baartman on his right foot in the right side of the penalty area to slot the ball past Stanford goalkeeper Matt Frank to score his third goal of the year.
- UCSB kept pushing for the equalizer, with redshirt freshman defender Lucas Gonzalez and Ballard McBride drawing saves out of Frank. The final opportunity came in the 90th minute when Baartman had a shot blocked by the Stanford defense, with the ball looking like it was destined for goal before making contact with the shins of the Cardinal players.
NOTABLE
- The Gauchos were outshot 15-10 by the Cardinal despite outshooting the hosts 9-5 in the second half, but held the advantage in shots on goal 7-6.
- UCSB sophomore goalkeeper Leroy Zeller made four saves in the loss.
QUOTABLE
- "We had our opportunities – [senior defender] Carson Vom Steeg, [junior forward] Nemo Philipp, and [junior attacker] Diran Bebekian all had chances, so it's hard to be disappointed in that we were able, at least by the second half, to put the ball on the ground and attack them and create opportunities." – head coach Tim Vom Steeg on UCSB's opportunities
- "I don't think we've had that much of the ball in any one time we've ever played Stanford – that speaks well for us moving forward but we do have to eliminate mistakes, keep creating chances, and improve on our finishing." – Tim Vom Steeg on UCSB's takeaways from the game
