HOW IT HAPPENED
1st Half
- The Titans (9-13, 4-8) got out to an early lead thanks to a hot start from guard Gabi Vidmar, who made Fullerton's first three shots to put the home side up 8-2. Lane helped keep UCSB (13-8, 7-5) in it with six first quarter points (3/4 FG).
- Senior Taylor Mole tied it at 8-8 with a layup at the 1:22 mark, but Fullerton guard Lily Wahinekapu scored with a second left capping a 5-0 Fullerton run to end the period. That was the first field goal of the night for Wahinekapu, who went on to lead all players with 24 points (9/17 FG).
- Wahinekapu hit a three to open the second quarter, giving CSF its largest lead of the opening half, 16-8. The Gaucho guards led a 14-3 run to take their first lead of the day. Alexis Tucker made two shots in the paint, Johnni Gonzalez hit a three, and Miller scored seven straight UCSB points to put her team up 22-19.
- Tucker would end the period with a turnaround jumper with a few seconds left to send the Gauchos into halftime leading 29-27. UCSB shot 69.2 percent (9/13 FG) from the field in the second. It was the only period the Gauchos bested the Titans, outscoring them 21-14.
2nd Half
- CSF took the advantage back in the third quarter, as UCSB went 2-for-12 (16.7%) from the field with its only buckets coming from Lane. The Titans led 41-35 through three.
- Three-pointers from Gonzalez and Miller helped keep the Gauchos within striking distance in the fourth, both times cutting Fullerton's lead to four. The Titans would score on three of four possessions to go up 55-48 with 3:15 remaining. UCSB was held without a field goal for the final six minutes as Fullerton ended the game on a 10-2 run.
NOTABLE
- UCSB entered the week with the Big West's top three-point percentage defense (24%), but allowed the Titans to knock down 7-of-14 (50%) on the night.
- The Gauchos continued to look like a different team on the road than they do at home. They are now 4-7 away from Santa Barbara this year, averaging 53.8 points per game, compared to 9-1 at the Thunderdome, where they score 72.3 points a night.
- Ila Lane continued to show why she owns the top field goal percentage in the conference, connecting on 7-of-9 (77.8%) attempts from close range. It was the fourth straight game that she has shot at least 60 percent from the field and the ninth time she has done so this season.
- Danae Miller made three triples (3/5 3FG) for the fifth time this year, something she did a career-best six times last season. She now has 142 made threes in her career, six shy of tying Melissa Zornig (148, 2010-14) for No. 7 all-time at UCSB.
