STANFORD, Calif. – The No. 8 UC Santa Barbara men's water polo team was defeated in both of its games on day two of the MPSF Invite, falling to No. 1 Cal, 16-6 and No. 8 Pacific, 14-9.
The Gauchos are now 7-6 overall. Cal ended the day with a 10-1 record and Pacific moved to 12-2.
Cal 16, UCSB 6

Opening day two in an 8:00 a.m. matchup against the nation's top-ranked team, UCSB put up six goals. However, the Bears jumped out to an 8-2 lead before halftime to cruise to their 10th straight win to begin the year.
Things were close in the early-going, as the Gauchos managed to tie things at 2-2 in the first quarter. Cal would pull away with three goals in under two minutes to close the opening period and shutout UCSB in the second. The Bears outscored UCSB 6-3 in the third and 2-1 in the final frame.
Tommy Hawkins led the Gauchos with two goals. Dash McFarland, Colton Gregory, Sam Nangle and Brock Zamanian all scored once. Goalkeeper Danny Roland finished with four saves.
Pacific 14, UCSB 9

The Gaucho offense was more effective in its second game of the day against the No. 4 Tigers. McFarland and Nangle paced UCSB with two goals each, while five other Gauchos scored once.
Despite putting 17 shots on target and forcing eight saves from Pacific goalkeeper Bae Fountain, UCSB would suffer its second straight loss. Pacific came out hot taking a 6-2 lead after one and went into halftime leading 10-4. The Gauchos outscored the Tigers 3-2 in the third quarter, with goals from McFarland, Nangle and Luke Redoutey.
The 14 goals were the second-most UCSB has conceded this season.
