BOCA RATON, Fla. (Jan. 16, 2023) — The UC Santa Barbara men's tennis team finished off their season-opening trip to Florida on Monday, defeating Rice University, 4-2 to finish the weekend with a 3-0 record. The Gauchos' perfect weekend marks the first time they have started a season 3-0 in over a decade.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Rice captured the doubles point, so the pressure was on during the singles portion.
- Rice extended their lead to 2-0 as Lucca Liu was defeated by Emir Sendogan.
- However, UCSB found their footing as play continued, forcing third sets on three of four courts.
- The first point came from Kai Brady who downed his opponent 6-3, 6-4.
- Then, Phillip Jordan defeated Yasha Zemel 5-7, 6-2, 6-0.
- The third point came from Gianluca Brunkow's win against Santiago Navarro, 6-2, 4-6, 6-2.
- Pablo Masjuan, ranked 77th nationally in singles clinched the match, beating his opponent 7-6, 4-6, 6-3.

The Gauchos will return to the Arnold Tennis Center on Saturday, January 21 to host Grand Canyon and Portland State. They will play GCU at 10:00 AM and Portland State at 1:45 PM.
