MANOA, Hawai'i – The UC Santa Barbara Women's Soccer Team wraps up the final week of the regular season as they travel to Hawai'i and UC Davis on Thursday, Oct. 19 and Sunday, Oct. 22 respectively.
LAST TIME OUT
The Gauchos are coming off a week that saw them go 1-1. On Thursday, Oct. 12 the Gauchos defeated CSUN 1-0 while falling on Sunday, Oct. 15 to Cal State Bakersfield.
The Rainbow Wahine last played on Sunday, Oct. 8 as they took on the UC Davis Aggies. Hawai'i fell in the matchup 3-2 before entering their bye week.
Like the Gauchos, UC Davis went 1-1 in their previous week of play. The Aggies defeated UC Riverside 2-1 before falling to Cal State Fullerton 1-0.
SCOUTING THE GAUCHOS
The Gauchos are currently 4-6-7 overall and 2-4-2 in Big West play and currently sit in a tie for eighth place with UC San Diego. With eight points in conference play UC Santa Barbara currently sits one point out of a potential spot in The Big West Championships.
UC Santa Barbara has scored 17 goals in 17 matches this season. Paving the way for the offense is
Lauren Helwig. Helwig currently leads the team in goals, assists and points. In the Gauchos' 1-0 win over CSUN,
Meg Burling became the 10th different goal-scorer on the season. Burling netted the game-winning goal in the 88th minute on a penalty kick.
The Gauchos look to change their fortune on the road in the final stretch of the season. Through eight road contests, the Gauchos sport a 0-4-4 record. Scoring 1.00 goals per match on the road. The last time UC Santa Barbara traveled to Hawai'i was during the 2021 season where they played to a scoreless draw with the Rainbow Wahine. They also traveled to UC Davis in the 2021 season and picked up a 1-0 victory.
SCOUTING THE RAINBOW WAHINE
Hawai'i comes into the matchup with a 4-5-3 overall record and a 3-3-1 record in Big West action. The Rainbow Wahine sit in fifth place with 10 points in Big West play.
In 12 matches Hawai'i has scored 22 goals an average of just under two goals per match. 10 different players have found the back of the net during the 2023 season so far. Leading the offense is Amber Gilbert who has scored six times. Sitting just behind her is Brynn Mitchell and Mia Foster who have scored four apiece. Gilbert, Mitchell and Foster have combined for 14 of 22 goals.
Although the Rainbow Wahine are averaging close to two goals per match, they are also allowing 1.83 goals per match. Goalkeeper Sophie Augustin has started all 12 matches in goal recording 47 saves and a 1.70 goals-against average.
SCOUTING THE AGGIES
UC Davis enters the weekend as one of four teams in The Big West with a .500 or better winning percentage. The Aggies are 7-6-2 overall and 3-2-2 in The Big West with 11 points and currently sit in a tie for third with Long Beach State.
In 15 matches the Aggies have scored 24 goals good for 1.60 goals per match. UC Davis has five student-athletes who have scored multiple goals in the season. Leslie Fregoso ranks third in The Big West in points with 16. She has scored six times and recorded four assists in 15 matches. The Aggies also have three other players who have scored three or more goals so far on the season.
The Aggie defense ranks second in The Big West in goals-against average with a 1.13. Goalkeeper Caeley Goldstein has started all 15 matches recording 57 saves and posting five shoutouts, four solo and one combined.
