IRVINE, Calif. – The UC Santa Barbara Women's Volleyball team (20-3) kicked off this weekend of matches in Orange County as the Gauchos took on the UC Irvine Anteaters. After four sets, the match went in favor of the home team as UC Santa Barbara lost to UC Irvine (19-25, 25-23, 24-26, 22-25).
FROM HEAD COACH MATT JONES
"Irvine played great tonight. I give credit to them for putting pressure on us from the service line and taking some great, aggressive swings. We weren't able to scratch out important points late in the set that we are used to getting. Now it's time to flush it and get ready for Fullerton tomorrow."
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Gauchos came out strong in the first set, taking a three-point lead over the Anteaters. However, it didn't take long for UC Irvine to fight back. They responded with a service run of their own, going up by four late in this set. Despite the Gauchos' best attempts to make a comeback, they weren't able to so as they dropped this first set to the Anteaters 25-19.
The power struggle between these two teams continued to the second set as the Gauchos and the Anteaters vied for the lead. It took until the Gauchos' 19th point to jump on top. Even though the Anteaters made a push to take this set into extra points, the Gauchos didn't allow it as they took the second set 25-23.
The final two sets went in favor of the Anteaters. Despite UC Santa Barbara's best efforts to pull out the win, UC Irvine would not let up. This ultimately resulted in the Gauchos dropping the final two sets 24-26 and 22-25.
