UC Santa Barbara Falls At UC San Diego

LA JOLLA, Calif. - The UC Santa Barbara Women's Soccer team came up short against UC San Diego Thursday night as they fell at Triton Soccer Stadium 2-1. The loss dropped UC Santa Barbara's record to 3-5-7 overall and 1-3-2 in Big West action.

After dominating the possession in the early part of the match UC Santa Barbara broke through in the 13th minute. Manuri Alwis broke the scoreless tie after scoring her second goal of the season. Alwis' first shot was saved, she gathered the rebound and snuck it past the keeper to give the Gauchos the lead. UC Santa Barbara created another chance in the 20th minute but couldn't beat the Triton keeper.

Following the save the Tritons leveled the match on a goal from Kennedy Carter in the 22nd minute. A combination play with Alexis Nguyen beat Maddie Buckley and the match was tied. In the 32nd minute UC Santa Barbara was awarded a penalty kick. Jessica Tamayo would be taken down in the box giving the Gauchos a chance to take the lead. Lauren Helwig stepped up to take the shot, she ripped a shot to the left side of the goal. The Triton goalkeeper timed her diving save perfectly and kept the ball out of the net.

UC San Diego took a 2-1 lead on Carter's second goal of the match in the 71st minute, the goal was assisted by Keara Fitzgerald. The Gauchos were unable to find an equalizing goal and the 2-1 score would hold.

The Gauchos will have a bye week and return to play on Thursday, Sept. 12. UC Santa Barbara will host CSUN at 7 p.m. in Harder Stadium. For those unable to attend the event in person the match will be live streamed through ESPN+ with live stats available through ucsbgauchos.com.
