Men's Tennis Signs Three in Fall Singing Window

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - The UC Santa Barbara Men's Tennis program has signed three players to National Letters of Intent, head coach Blake Muller announced today.

The first of three signees is Matei Gavrea. The Cluj-Napoca, Romania native attends Weil Tennis Academy and College Preparatory School where he was named Captain for the Community. Gavrea already has a PTT match win and won a U14 International Tournament.

"We started recruiting Matei early on in the recruiting process," explained Muller. "He is a special kid and what stood out to us was his competitiveness, his passion for tennis, and his intangibles. His intangibles really stood out to us. He has continued to develop since committing here over a year ago and we are excited to get him here."

Teo Masera comes to UC Santa Barbara from Rome, Italy. Masera has a high tennis IQ and will have an immediate impact on the program.

"Teo is a special kid who had some really good options as he was going through the recruiting process," said Muller. "I have never actually recruited anyone quite like him. He is just an incredibly unique kid and his tennis level is very high, he should have an immediate impact on our program. Ultimately I think he will just be a great fit at UC Santa Barbara and embrace everything the university has to offer."

Charlie Underwood joins the Gauchos out of Montara, Calif. The Half Moon Bay High School signee was named to the honor roll while at Half Moon Bay. The five sport athlete is set to bolster a Gaucho lineup that has already garnered national recognition so far this fall.

"Charlie is Coached by a former Gaucho, Max Taylor actually," Muller said. "I had a chance to watch him play and I was super impressed with him. What stood out was his raw athleticism. He grew up in a place where there aren't a ton of people for him to play against so getting him in this environment he will excel. He fits really well with the two others we brought in and will be a great fit here in Santa Barbara."

The UC Santa Barbara Men's Tennis team is coming off a season that saw them break the program record for most wins in a single season going 22-4 and winning The Big West Championships, earning a spot in the NCAA Tournament.
