SAN DIEGO - After being just the fourth UC Santa Barbara Men's Tennis student-athlete to reach the ITA Southwest Regional Final last weekend,
Pablo Masjuan carried that momentum into the ITA National Fall Championships winning two matches and making it to the quarterfinal round of the Championship.
Masjuan drew Kenta Miyoshi in the opening round of the Championship and won a gritty three-set match. After winning the opening set 6-3, he fell 7-6(5) in set two. In the final set the 61st-ranked Masjuan cruised to a 6-3 victory, ultimately advancing to the round of 16.Â
In the round of 16 Masjuan would be matched up with Tyler Zink the 40th-ranked singles player from Oklahoma State. Again Masjuan would win a tough three-set matchup. After falling 7-6(8) in the opening set, he would go on to dominate the last two sets winning 6-0 and 6-3 to advance to the quarterfinal round.Â
Masjuan, being one of eight players left in the tournament matched up with the 20th-ranked Jack Pinnington from TCU. Unfortunately, Masjuan's magical run would end there. Pinnington would defeat Masjuan in straight-sets winning 6-4 and 6-3.
The Championship concluded the end of the fall season for Masjuan. He and the UC Santa Barbara Men's Tennis team will take the next couple of months to prepare for the fast-approaching spring season.
The Gauchos' spring season will be announced soon!
