SANTA BARBARA, Calif.- The UC Santa Barbara men and women's swim teams finished the first day of the UCSB Invite in dominant fashion, with the Gauchos taking, at least, top seven finishes in every event. Because it is an invite, the meet will not be scored.
The race for first in the men's 50 Free was particularly exciting as Matthew Driscoll and Sean Gutowski were neck-in-neck to clock in at 20.28 and 20.36 respectively. The 200 IM also saw some excitement as Taber daCosta and Jack Trujillo battled it out, but it was daCosta that ultimately touched first at 1:50.61 with Trujillo right on his heels to come in at 1:50.85.
The women's 50 Free saw Ashley Ray and Reagan Nibarger battling it out, but Ray emerged victorious with a time of 23.54 while Nibarger touched in at 23.78. Samantha Banos touched first in the 200 IM with a time of 2:03.24, but Tyryn Empremsilapa was close on her heels to finish second at 2:03.49.
The Gauchos will return to Campus Pool tomorrow morning, February 4, at 10 AM for day two of the UCSB Invite. The graduating seniors will be honored before the start of the second session at 3:45 PM.
