Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Valiant Effort By Gauchos End In Defeat Against No. 6 Ducks

UC Santa Barbara Women's Volleyball drops three-set match to the No. 6 University of Oregon Ducks.

SAN DIEGO, Calif. (Sept. 1, 2023) – The UC Santa Barbara Women's Volleyball team (4-1) kicked off the San Diego State Invitational today playing one of the best teams in the NCAA in the No. 6 University of Oregon. After this match was over, it was the Ducks who came out on top as they took down the Gauchos in three sets (25-21, 25-13, 25-17).

FROM HEAD COACH MATT JONES
"We knew today would be tough and a great test for us. We came out executing fairly well on our scouting report and played right with them. After that, they obviously found another gear that we couldn't match. That's one of the most talented teams in the country; they are extremely well trained and very disciplined. There was a lot for us to learn from them. Now, we're excited to see the team bounce back tomorrow."

HOW IT HAPPENED
During the first set, the Gauchos were neck and neck with the Ducks, eventually taking a two-point lead early on thanks to back-to-back kills from Sophie Reavis. However, Oregon responded quickly, chipping away at UC Santa Barbara's lead before finally surpassing them late in the set. This first set ultimately ended in favor of the Ducks as the Gauchos lost 25-21.

The last two sets told very similar stories. Despite UC Santa Barbara's best efforts early in these sets, the Ducks went on multiple service runs, securing extensive leads that UC Santa Barbara couldn't battle back from. The Gauchos lost the final two sets 25-13 and 25-17.

LOOKING AT THE NUMBERS
  • Michelle Ohwobete led the team's offense efforts in today's match, registering 11 kills and only three errors to finish with a .320 hitting percentage as an outside hitter. She also added on a point from the service line as she contributed an ace.
  • Macall Peed's defensive efforts carried over from yesterday's match as she ended the match with 11 digs, which ended up being 38 percent of the team's digs for the day.
  • The combo of Reavis and Andi Kreiling rounded out the front row defense as these two tallied three blocks each.
