Men's Volleyball Secure Second Win With Reverse Sweep Over Patriots

UC Santa Barbara Men's Volleyball came back from behind to take down George Mason.

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – The No. 15 UC Santa Barbara Men's Volleyball team (2-0) competed on the second day of the Asics Invitational as they took on the No. 20 George Mason Patriots. Despite the first two sets going against the Gauchos, the home team rallied back for the win as they took down the Patriots in five sets with scores of 15-25, 18-25, 26-24, 25-21 and 15-10.

FROM HEAD COACH RICK MCLAUGHLIN
"George Mason out-played us the first two sets by quite a bit. But I liked how our guys kept battling and improving just enough to somehow get the W. I think we learned a lot tonight, but we just have to keep improving and learning."

HOW IT HAPPENED
The first two sets did not go as planned for the Gauchos. George Mason could not be stopped, and no matter how much they tried, the Gauchos' offense could not gain any traction. This resulted in the 15-25 and 18-25 scores for the first two sets.

That's when the Gauchos picked up the pace. Over the next three sets, UC Santa Barbara hit at a .486 clip on their way to completing the reverse sweep over George Mason. The Blue and Gold just squeezed out of the third set 26-24 before pushing forward with the 25-21 and 15-10 wins in the final two sets.

LOOKING AT THE NUMBERS
  • Geste Bianchi had another phenomenal night for the Gauchos. He only played in four of the team's five sets, but led the team with 30 kills while hitting at a .479 clip.
  • Jack Walmer worked on setting up the offense today. He finished the night with 50 assists. To go along with that, he was tied for the most blocks on the team with three.
  • Joe Wallace was the anchor for the back row defense. He ended his first match as a Gaucho, racking up 10.
  • Ben Coordt was another player the Gauchos went to tonight. He added on nine kills while hitting at a .333 clip from the pin.
