NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - The UC Santa Barbara Women's Soccer team wrapped up their three-match roadtrip with a third consecutive draw, this time playing to a scoreless tie against CSUN. Along with recording a draw, the Gauchos extended their unbeaten streak to four games against CSUN and ninth consecutive this season.
FROM HEAD COACH PAUL STUMPF
"I was pretty pleased with the performance," said Stumpf. We created a few good looks at the goal in the second half. Overall another strong defensive performance, and clean sheet by Maddie to get us a result."
HOW IT HAPPENED
After the Matadors kicked off and the Gauchos gained possession, they wasted no time to get on the attack. Three Gauchos fired consecutive shots in the seventh minute, but could not find the back of the net.
During the next 20 minutes of the play, neither side was able to create a quality opportunity as the deadlock continued on. The Gauchos again started to apply some pressure but could not find the back of the net to take the lead. The remainder of the half was mostly played in the midfield with neither side able to break the backline.
The game continued to be played in the middle of the field until the 56th minute when Emily Caughey took a shot off a free quick forcing the Matador keeper to make a spectacular save. They continued to apply the pressure and a few moments later a shot by Jaclyn Degidio forced the CSUN keeper to make another tremendous save.
The ball was pawed straight up in the air, hit off the crossbar and then recovered by the goalkeeper just in time, as Devin Greer was making a run for a follow up shot attempt.
One of the better chances from the Matadors came in the 74th minute off a corner kick. The kick found a CSUN attacker head in the box and sailed over the crossbar. On the ensuing goal kick the Matadors stole the ball and looked to breakaway but their shot was blocked and the scoring opportunity was turned away.
In the 78th minutes CSUN almost found the back of the net as it got over the outstretched Maddie Buckley but fortunately for the Blue and Gold went wide right.
The Gauchos were unable to breakthrough, in the match as CSUN and UC Santa Barbara played to a scoreless draw.
