Brown and Rolland Reach Semifinals as Gauchos Post Strong Showing at ITA Regional Championships

Box Score TEMPE, Ariz. - The UC Santa Barbara Men's Tennis team battled for impressive victories at the ITA Southwest Regional Championships this weekend. Conrad Brown and Dominique Rolland took dominant wins as a doubles pair to reach the semifinals. Rolland also appeared in the singles quarterfinals along with Gianluca Brunkow

SINGLES COMPETITION
Friday saw seven Gauchos in the opening round of the main draw after a dominant qualifying round. Brunkow and Rolland each earned three wins on the weekend in singles and a quarterfinals appearance on Sunday. 

Rolland balanced two dominant streaks in singles and doubles across the week putting up six wins between both brackets. In his opening match, he dropped the first set but came back in the following sets for a 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 win. He won his round of 32 and round of 16 matches in straight sets 7-6 (7-4), 6-4 and 6-3, 6-2, respectively. Rolland would ultimately fall to the No. 2 seed of the main draw in the quarterfinals 6-2, 6-1. 

Brunkow brough the heat in his 6-4, 6-3 opening match. His following two matches were battles with Arizona and Hawai'i where he would find a 6-2, 2-6, 6-2 win in the round of 32 and a hard-fought 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7-3) performance in the round of 16. The quarterfinals would be his final match of the championship falling 6-2, 6-4. 

Lucca Liu also started strong in a 6-3, 6-3 win in the round of 64. It took all three sets in the round of 32 to earn his spot in the round of 16 with a 3-6, 7-6 (9-7), 6-1 performance. Liu would fall in straight sets 6-4, 6-3 in the round of 16 to end his run in the main draw. 

Conrad Brown was unable to move through to the round of 32 with a 7-5, 6-4 loss in his opening match. However, he earned wins in the consolation bracket starting with a 7-6(7-4), 2-6, 10-8 performance. He took another two matches in a tiebreak with 6-2, 4-6, 10-6 win in the consolation round of 16 and 1-6, 6-3, 10-7 win in the quarterfinals. In the consolation semifinal, Brown faced Arizona State where he was defeated 6-2, 7-6 (7-2). 

Diogo Morais opened with a 6-4, 6-4 win to advance to the round of 32. There, he was unable to force a third set with a 10-8 loss in the second set tiebreak for a 6-2, 7-6 (10-8) final score. 

Gustav Theilgaard lost in the round of 64 following his initial 6-2, 6-2 qualifying win. In the consolation round, he fought in the tiebreak but lost 4-6, 6-3, 10-8. 

Charlie Underwood had an impressive showing in the qualifying round taking straight sets over both UC Riverside and the bracket's No. 2 seed out of UC San Diego. His streak would end with a 7-5, 6-2 loss in the round of 64. In his consolation match, Underwood forced a tiebreak but ultimately fell 6-3, 4-6, 10-3.

Matei Gavrea took a 6-4, 6-2 win in the qualifying round. His next match was a battle with Hawai'i in which Gavrea was unable to break through the tiebreaks in both sets resulting in a 7-6 (11-9), 7-6 (7-4) loss. 

Teo Masera won his first match as a Gaucho with an impressive 6-1, 6-0 performance over Hawaii in the qualifying round. He did not advance to the main draw after a loss to ASU Thursday afternoon. 

DOUBLES COMPETITION
Brown and Rolland had a first round bye followed by a win over Cal Poly in the tiebreak 7-5. They earned a spot in the quarterfinals with an 8-6 win against Arizona State. In Sunday's quarterfinals, the pair took down the No. 1 seed 8-6 to advance to the semifinals. Brown and Rollands' impressive run would end on Monday in a 6-2, 6-4 loss to San Diego. 

Liu and Morais took on Cal Poly in the round of 64 coming out on top 8-4. They kept the momentum into their 8-5 win on Saturday over Hawaii. The round of 16 match on Friday would end their win streak with a 8-3 loss to San Diego. 

Freshmen pair Underwood and Gavrea won 8-6 in the round of 64, but ultimately fell 8-2 in the round of 32 to the No. 6 seed. After a first round bye, Brunkow and Theilgaard fell in the tiebreak in their round of 32 match. 

UP NEXT
The Gauchos will travel to USC for the Dennis Rizza JKC Collegiate Championships in two weeks. The competition will begin on Friday, Nov. 1 and run through Sunday, Nov. 3.
