Gauchos Ace Fall Tennis Classic

SANTA BARBARA, Calif.- The Gauchos put on an impressive performance in front of a home crowd at the UC Santa Barbara Fall Tennis Classic this weekend.

Diogo Morais had an incredible start to his first season with the Blue and Gold winning the championship title in singles. Charlie Underwood also debuted with four consecutive victories to win the championship for Flight C in his first time out as a Gaucho. Conrad Brown, Lucca Liu and Dominique Rolland all made the semifinals as well, making for some friendly Gaucho competition in the Flight A bracket. Three doubles pairs won their brackets with Gianluca Brunkow and Gustav Theilgaard winning the doubles Flight A Championship for the Gauchos while Brown and Rolland won the final for the doubles B bracket and Charlie Underwood and Matei Gavrea took the C bracket championship. 

SINGLES COMPETITION 
Morais had an even battle in his first match, initially losing the first set 6-3. He fought hard in the second set to come out on top 7-5. The third set made for a close match between the two as it went 6-6. Morais set the tone from the start of the tiebreak, coming out on top 7-2 in the tiebreak. His quarterfinal match presented a tough battle in the first set, falling 0-6 but he quickly commanded the match with a 0-6, 6-3, 6-0 final score.  

After earning his first win with the Gauchos at the Battle in the Bay, Dominique Rolland won in straight sets in his initial match at the classic 6-2, 6-2. He faced Morais next where the two each took a set to force a third set where Morais came out on top with a final score of 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 to head to the finals.  

Lucca Liu won his opening match 6-2, 6-2 and in the quarterfinals 6-3, 6-2 to advance to the semifinals. Conrad Brown won his quarterfinals match 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 before facing Lucca Liu. Both men put up good sets but ultimately, Brown came out on top 7-5, 1-6, 6-4 to head to the final. 

Brown and Morais faced each other in the final where Morais took the championship with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Brown.  

Freshman Charlie Underwood won the Flight C final winning four consecutive matches. He won three of the four in straight sets. He earned a 6-2, 6-3 win in the first round. Underwood faced UC Davis in both the quarterfinals and semifinals of the C Bracket winning 6-3, 6-2 and 6-3, 5-7, 6-2, respectively. He defeated UC San Diego in the final match of the bracket 6-2, 6-3 for a dominant first appearance with the Gauchos.   

Matei Gavrea had his first collegiate win over Hawaii's Diego Dalisay 6-3, 6-2 but ultimately fell to Santa Clara in the next round. Gustav Theilgaard got two wins on the weekend. In the initial round, he secured a 6-1, 6-2 win followed by a 6-7, 6-1, 6-1 quarterfinal match. He battled Cal Poly in the semifinals of the B Flight where he ultimately lost 7-6, 5-7, 6-4.  

DOUBLES COMPETITION 
Brunkow and Theilgaard won the doubles championship with three wins on the weekend. They earned an 8-4 win over Saint Mary's in the opening round. They took an 8-6 win over Cal Poly reaching the final for the bracket where they defeated Hawaii in an 8-3 win.  

Brown and Rolland also took their bracket with an 8-4 win over LMU in the semifinals and another 8-4 win to defeat Santa Clara in the final of Flight B.  

Liu and Morais appeared in the doubles opening round for Flight A but lost in the tiebreak to Cal Poly 8-7 (4).  

Underwood and Gavrea dominated in Flight C doubles with an 8-1 win in the opening round over Saint Mary's. The freshmen pair won 8-5 in the championship for the bracket against Westmont.
