Gyenis Named Big West Player of the Week

IRVINE, Calif. — After he powered the UC Santa Barbara offense over the weekend, Adam Gyenis has been named The Big West Men's Water Polo Player of the Week, the conference announced on Wednesday. It is a second career award for Gyenis, whose five-goal, five-assist weekend provided a swan song as the Hungarian played his final games in Santa Barbara. Those five goals brought his career total up to 158, the eighth most career goals by any Gaucho ever.

The Budapest native scored twice and added an assist on his Senior Day last Sunday, helping the Gauchos mount a rally against No. 4 USC, but the crown jewel of his weekend came a day earlier against No. 10 Long Beach State. Gyenis scored three goals and assisted four more, adding a steal and field block on the defensive end. His seven points led the game and, more importantly, helped the Gauchos come from behind, force overtime and upset the Beach in The Big West regular season finale.

Gyenis and Santa Barbara will next be in action for the opening round of The Big West Championship on Friday, Nov. 22 at the Schaal Aquatics Center in Davis. The Gauchos are lined up to face Long Beach State in that game, though the final seedings and matchups have not been announced by The Big West.
