HONOLULU, Hawai'i – The UC Santa Barbara Women's Volleyball team (10-14) hit the road as they took on the University of Hawai'i Rainbow Wahine in the Stan Sheriff Center. The Gauchos did what they could to hang tight with one of the best teams in The Big West, but it wasn't enough as they lost in three straight sets with scores of 14-25, 21-25 and 17-25.
FROM HEAD COACH MATT JONES
"This was two matches in a row where we didn't execute the scouting report. We got completely outplayed in serve and pass. It was a complete 180 from our match with them at home."
HOW IT HAPPENED
UC Santa Barbara could not get in a rhythm, which showed in the first set. It seemed like no matter what the Gauchos tried, they could not rattle the Wahine. Just like that, the first set was over as UC Santa Barbara fell with a score of 25-14.
Hawai'i continued where they left off in the first set as they came out with a 6-0 run. That was until
Eva Travis and
Emma McDermott got hot. With their help, the Gauchos got out of their rut and started to rally back against this tough Wahine team as Hawai'i was forced to call an early timeout. From there, UC Santa Barbara went point-for-point with Hawai'i as they did what they could to take the lead. That was until the Wahine picked up the pace yet again. Even though the Gauchos did what they could to close the gap, it wasn't enough as UC Santa Barbara dropped the second set with a score of 25-21.
The Gauchos finally woke up in this third set as they came out strong from the start. These two teams battled it out through the first 10 points as they exchanged the lead on three separate occasions. This is when Hawai'i made their move. The Wahine went on a four-point run that gave them all the momentum they needed to close out this set. This resulted in UC Santa Barbara dropping the third and final set with a score of 25-17.
