Santa Barbara's Late Comeback Falls Short in Extras

SANTA BARBARA, Calif --The UC Santa Barbara Softball team put together a furious comeback, scoring seven runs over the fifth, sixth and seventh innings, but the late-game rally came up short in extra innings and they fell 10-8 to the Northern Colorado Bears Saturday.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Gauchos were trailing 7-0 in the fifth inning when they first put runs on the board. Santa Barbara scored three runs in the frame, highlighted by a two-RBI double from Madelyn McNally.

The Gauchos kept the Bears off the board before narrowing the gap further in the sixth. Elicia Acosta's bases-clearing triple scored all three runs in the frame for UC Santa Barbara, which brought the score to 7-6 in favor of the Bears.

Santa Barbara held the Bears off the board before rallying to tie it up at seven in the seventh. The Gauchos scored once on an RBI single off the bat of senior Ashley Donaldson.

Both the Bears and Gauchos were held scoreless in the first extra frame, but Northern Colorado broke the tie and took the lead in the ninth inning.  A three-run long ball but the Bears were ahead by three. The Gauchos got back on the scoreboard in the ninth inning when freshman Tehya Banks crossed home plate narrowing the Bears lead to 10-8. The Gauchos were unable to get any closer and fell.

Junior pitcher Ava Bradford was dominant out of the bullpen holding the Bears scoreless for three innings. Her lone blemish was the three-run home run.

Junior Elicia Acosta led the way offensively for the Gauchos, going 2-for-4 in the ballgame with a triple and three RBI.
