Game Recap: Women's Water Polo |

Gauchos Split Midwestern Twin Bill on Day Two of Barbara Kalbus Invite

IRVINE, Calif. — The No. 13 UC Santa Barbara Women's Water Polo team faced a pair of foes from the Midwest on their second day at the Barbara Kalbus Invitational, downing the No. 13 Indiana Hoosiers, 10-7, in the morning contest but falling to the No. 8 Michigan Wolverines, 8-5, in the afternoon. The trio of Camilla Mackay, Juju Amaral and Leigh Lyter led the attack against the Hoosiers, scoring seven of the Gauchos' goals against Indiana. Annie Kuester carried the load in the game against Michigan, tallying a pair of goals. In goal, Madison Walker tallied 17 saves across the two games.

The Gauchos got off to a strong start and never really looked back in their morning action, never trailing in the game. Mackay got the scoring going, and while the Hoosiers did tie the score back up, it would be their only goal of the first half. Amaral put the Gauchos back in front, then Drew Halvorson added to the advantage before the end of the first quarter.

Lyter scored the next three goals in the game — two in the second quarter to put Santa Barbara up, 5-1, at halftime, and a third to start the third quarter. Indiana tried to claw their way back into the game from there, but the Gauchos matched the Hoosiers nearly every step of the way. Goals from Mackay, Kuester and Christina Mullane helped Santa Barbara out-score Indiana, 4-3, in the third quarter, and Amaral added a final insurance goal in the fourth.

NO. 13 UC SANTA BARBARA 5, NO. 8 MICHIGAN 8
The Gauchos were first to score again in their afternoon matchup, with Lyter denting the twine a minute and a half in. After the Wolverines tied it back up, Halvorson scored to put Santa Barbara back in front. But Michigan rattled off a 3-0 run to end the first quarter and start the second. Kuester stepped up for the Gauchos, scoring before halftime to get some momentum going, then scoring again to start the second half and tie the scores back up.

Another 3-0 Michigan run left the Gauchos with it all to do with three and a half minutes to play, and despite Mullane converting a five-meter penalty shot, there would be no rally for Santa Barbara.
