Gauchos Set for Two Ranked Matches in Pepperdine and Oregon

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – The UC Santa Barbara Men's Tennis team is set to host Pepperdine on Thursday, Feb. 29 and Oregon on Saturday, Mar. 2. The Gauchos have secured two shutout victories since they began their homestand at the Arnhold Tennis Center this season and currently carry a 23-home match winning streak into the week.

HISTORY
A long-standing series dating back to 1974, the Gauchos and Waves will meet for the 42nd time. Pepperdine currently leads the all-time series 37-4. Two of the Gauchos' four all-time wins against the Waves have come post-2015. The last win for the Gauchos against Pepperdine was in March of 2019 when they blanked the Waves 7-0.
 
The Gauchos currently hold a 10-15 record with the Oregon Ducks, with the Gauchos' last win coming in 2019. The most recent matchup ended in a tough 4-1 defeat for the Blue and Gold. The Ducks enter the match with a good deal of experience from this season, with 10 wins already under their belt.
 
IN THE RANKINGS
The ITA announced the newest team, singles and doubles rankings last Tuesday, Feb. 20. Pablo Masjuan continues to climb in singles as he jumped up four spots to No. 20 in the singles rankings. Additionally, he and his doubles partner, Gianluca Brunkow, moved up over 20 spots in the doubles rankings now slotted at No. 34. New this week the Gauchos entered the team rankings for the first time this season being ranked No. 75 after a two-win week.
 
PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
Gianluca Brunkow was named The Big West Men's Tennis Player of the Week for his dominant performance on the court this past week. The junior won both his singles matches in straight sets including a win in the No. 1 position against Idaho. He also earned a win in the No. 1 doubles position over Idaho. The gauchos
 
FALL RECAP
UC Santa Barbara started strong in the fall with Pablo Masjuan and Gianluca Brunkow picking up a doubles victory against, at the time, the No. 12 ranked doubles teams in the nation in their opening fall tournament. Later on Masjuan would qualify for the ITA National Fall Championships and make a great run but ultimately fell in the quarterfinal round of the Championship.
