Gauchos Salvage Blue-Green Rivalry Series with 5-1 Win

SAN LUIS OBISPO, CA --The UC Santa Barbara Softball team took a 1-0 lead in the second inning and never trailed from there on the way to a 5-1 victory over the Cal Poly Mustangs on Friday.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Gauchos got on the scoreboard first, starting in the second inning. Freshman Tehya Banks came across to score the lone run of the inning for Santa Barbara.

The Gauchos then held the Mustangs scoreless before getting back on the board the very next inning. UC Santa Barbara scored once on an RBI single off the bat of Alexa Sams, which brought the score to 2-0 in favor of the Gauchos.

Cal Poly narrowed the Gauchos lead to 2-1 before they stretched the advantage to 5-1 in the fifth inning. The score remained 5-1 for the rest of the game, as UC Santa Barbara coasted to the win.

Senior Camryn Snyder got the win for the Gauchos. The right-hander went seven innings, giving up one run on four hits, allowing four walks and striking out two.

In the batter's box, the Gauchos were paced by freshman Ainsley Waddell, who went 3-for-3 on the day with a double and a walk. Junior Alexa Sams furnished a standout day at the plate as well, going 2-for-3 with a walk and two RBI. Senior Madelyn McNally also helped out for UCSB, putting together one hit in four trips to the plate while adding an RBI.

GAME NOTES

  • Ainsley Waddell compiled three hits in the game for the Gauchos. This was her eighth multi-hit game of the season.
  • The Gauchos had control of the rest of the game after jumping ahead of the Mustangs 1-0 in the top of the second.
  • The Gauchos out-hit the Mustangs at a 10-4 clip.
  • Camryn Snyder limited Cal Poly to just 1-for-8 (.125) with runners in scoring position.


UP NEXT
The Gauchos will return home next weekend as they host Cal State Bakersfield on Saturday, April 6 and Sunday, April 7. UC Santa Barbara and Bakersfield will play a doubleheader Saturday starting at noon and finish with a single game on Sunday starting at 1 p.m.
