STILLWATER, Okla. – UC Santa Barbara Men's Tennis student-athlete
Pablo Masjuan entered the NCAA Singles Championships ranked No. 75 in the most recent Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) rankings. His ranking will only go up after an outstanding performance in the Round of 64.
Masjuan fell in a quick hole in the opening set after going down 5-1. The senior fought back and started to game momentum after winning four straight games to level the match at five games aside. The two would trade games and evened it up at at six games aside. Unfortunately, Masjuan could not pull through on the tiebreaking set and fell 7-1.
Set two was much like the first as Masjuan and sixth-ranked Toby Samuel traded games before Masjuan rattled off two straight to take a 5-3 edge. Samuel came back and won two games to level the match at five a piece. After trading the next two games, the duo would go to another tiebreaker tied at six games. Masjuan overcame a 4-2 deficit to emerge victorious and tie the match.
In the final set Masjuan came back from down 2-1 to take a 4-2 lead winning three straight games including a blanking in game four to even the match. Samuel looked to make a comeback winning the seventh game to cut the deficit to 4-3, but Masjuan was too much to handle as he took care of business and ended the third set winning the next two game to win 6-3 in set three.
His win advances him to the Round of 32 where he will face No. 38-ranked Sebastian Dominko of Notre Dame. Match time is still to be announced.
