STILLWATER, Okla. - The top UC Santa Barbara Men's Tennis doubles pairing of Gianluca Brunkow and Pablos Masjuan earned a thrilling victory over the No. 29-ranked pairing from Michigan Tuesday night.
The Wolverines gained the opening game but from there the two pairing would trade off games, going back-and-forth. The set would wind up being knotted at six a side and go to a tie breaker. The two sides would not waiver as they would need more than the allotted seventh point to decide the opening set. After tying the match at six points, UC Santa Barbara won the next two to earn a 7-6 (6) victory in the opening set.
Michigan came out on fire in the second set taking three of the first four games. The Gauchos tried to battle back but it was too little too late and the Wolverines would take the set to knot it up at one set a side.
The final set was a 10-point tie breaker that saw Michigan take an early 2-0 advantage, but three quick points by the Gauchos quickly put them in front. Another point from Michigan tied it up but the Gauchos again rattled off three straight points to take a 6-3 lead. Unfortunately the Wolverines responded with a three-point run of their own to tie the game. Brunkow and Masjuan did not fret as they won the next four point to secure the victory.
Brunkow and Masjuan now advance to the Round of 16 where they will face No. 13 ranked Antoine Cornut-Chauvinc and Joshua Dous Karpenschif. Times for the match have yet to be announces.
