Box Score SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - The UC Santa Barbara Men's Tennis team traveled to student-athletes up north to compete in the Battle in the Bay. Gianluca Brunkow and Dominique Rolland each earned quality wins over the weekend.
SINGLES COMPETITION
Gianluca Brunkow opened his singles play against the No. 3 seed, and 32nd-ranked Pedro Vives from TCU. Brunkow took him down in straight sets winning 7-6 (2) and 7-5. Advancing to the Round of 32, Brunkow now took on Tiago Silva from Pacific. A three-set match saw Brunkow prevail as he moved on to the quarterfinals with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 victory. In the quarterfinals, Brunkow would fight hard against fifth-seeded and 56th ranked Carl Emil Overbeck from Cal. His run would end there with a 6-4, 6-4 straight-set loss.
Dominique Rolland earned his first victory in the Blue and Gold with a straight set victory over the No. 2 seeded and eighth-ranked Karlis Ozolins from Illinois. The Calabasas native lost in the ensuing round, falling 6-1, 6-1 to Timofey Stepanov of Cal.
DOUBLES COMPETITION
Brunkow and Rolland entered the weekend as the 45th ranked doubles pairing. They began their tournament against the No. 1 seeded team from TCU, Pedro Vives and Luis Maxted. A hard fought match ended with the Gauchos winning a tiebreaker 8-7 (4). As they moved on to the quarterfinals the duo bested Chris Papa and Mxi Homberg of Pepperdine, 8-4. Just one win away from advancing to the Championship match the Gauchos ran into a buzzsaw that was Carl Emil Overbeck and Theo Dean from Cal. The Cal partnership was the No. 4 seed and are ranked 25th in the country. Unfortunately the Gauchos run ended there, falling 8-3.
UP NEXT
The Gauchos will have just under a month off before hosting their own tournament. The UC Santa Barbara Fall Classic. The Classic will run from Oct. 4 through Oct. 6 across all tennis courts on campus.
