SAN DIEGO – The UC Santa Barbara Women's Volleyball team (1-3) was back in action this weekend as they kicked off the Jack Talmadge Classic hosted by the University of San Diego. After four sets, it was Arizona State that came out with the win as the Gauchos lost with scores of 25-10, 25-23, 25-16 and 25-14.
FROM HEAD COACH MATT JONES
"This was a tough one. We played really strong in the second set, but did not execute the scouting report throughout the rest of the match. Now it's time for us to get some rest and prep for tomorrow."
HOW IT HAPPENED
The first set did not start the way the Gauchos would have liked. The Blue and Gold hung tight for the first three points before Arizona State started to make their move. With the help of a 9-1 run, the Sun Devils had the 20-9 lead, not giving UC Santa Barbara any room for error. By the time the first set was over, the final score sat at 25-10 in favor of ASU.
The Gauchos were fired up in the second set as they looked to make a comeback. It was an even matchup through the first six points before the Sun Devils pulled ahead, growing their lead to five. That's when the Gauchos started to fight back. UC Santa Barbara went on a 7-1 run, which closed the gap and then some. Even though Arizona State made a push towards the end, it wasn't enough for the win as UC Santa Barbara took the second set 25-23.
The last two sets told a similar story to the first. The Gauchos hung tight with the Sun Devils for the first few points before Arizona State ran away with it. The Blue and Gold did their best to come back in both of these sets, but the Sun Devils proved to be too much as the Gauchos dropped the final two sets 25-16 and 25-14.
