Gauchos Net Two Goals but Fall in Heartbreaker

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The Gauchos battled Sunday afternoon with two goals by Emma Corcoran and Devin Greer but couldn't manage to shut down Colorado College's shots from outside the box.

FROM HEAD COACH PAUL STUMPF
"That one is tough to swallow," said Stumpf. "We gave up three goals, two bad ones. We got caught out of position, but there are som positives to take away. We scored multiple goals in tough conditions. We were dealing with the elevation and a very bouncy surface. In the end, I believe our team made forward strides on this road trip."

HOW IT HAPPENED
Santa Barbara went on the attack early with shots on target and high from Isabella Ong and Devin Greer, respectively. The shots were followed by a quick offensive return by Colorado College sent wide.

The Gauchos found the back of the net in the 15th minute with Jessica Carlton on the corner kick. Her cross found the foot of Emma Corcoran to slide the ball past the Colorado defense putting the Gauchos up 1-0.

The 20th minute brought two Santa Barbara shots: Chase Yu's landed wide while Emily Caughey took a shot on target up high but to no avail with a save from Colorado College's Regan Wallace. The Tigers tied up the game in the 24th minute with a long goal from the 18 past a diving Maddie Buckley.

Both teams exchanged shots until the 37th minute when the Tigers pushed ahead with another long goal ending the first half with the Gauchos down 2-1.

Santa Barbara started the half ready to tie up the match starting with the only three shots of the first 17 minutes of the half. These were followed up by a good look from Isabella Ong with a shot to the bottom left, but the Gauchos were able to bring the score up.

Shots by O'Callaghan Liu and Emma Corcoran gave the offense momentum in the 70th minute when Liu sent the ball downfield to an open Devin Greer who had a quick touch beyond the reach of Colorado College to tie up the match 2-2.

Ava Jarolimek and Haley Phillips kept up the offensive pressure with shots for the Gauchos while neither team was able to pull ahead. In the 85th minute, a cross from right field to the head of Colorado College's Brett Tsamasfyros snuck past the Gauchos to give Colorado the lead once again.

Liu gave the last offensive push for Santa Barbara with a shot off target in the 86th minute but the 3-2 score remained until the final whistle.

UP NEXT
The Gauchos will return hom on Thursday, Sept. 12 as they host the University of Nebraska Omaha. The match is set to kick off at 7 p.m.
