Buckley Comes Up Big Late to Preserve Draw with Beach

LONG BEACH, Calif. — The UC Santa Barbara Women's Soccer team finished the weekend with a draw against Long Beach State on Sunday at George Allen Field in Long Beach, California. After a 53rd minute goal the Gauchos conceded a goal in the 74th minute off a set piece.

FROM HEAD COACH PAUL STUMPF
" We are fortunate to be leaving Long Beach with a point," said Stumpf. "It wasn't our best performance on the ball, but our defensive performance showed our grit and determination."

HOW IT HAPPENED
The match between UC Santa Barbara and Long Beach State began with both teams setting a defensive tone. LBSU had several shots on goal, including a 28th minute shot that was saved by Maddie Buckley. Chayse Yu had one of the Gauchos few offensive opportunities, sending a shot over the goal in the 13th minute. The period concluded scoreless, with UC Santa Barbara committing multiple fouls. Both teams ended the period without a goal, going into halftime with the score tied at 0-0.

Caitlyn Simons put UC Santa Barbara ahead in the 53rd minute with a goal, assisted by Haley Phillips. Phillips dribbled the ball around a defender and crossed the ball to the back post where Simons found the back of the net. Long Beach State responded in the 73rd minute to equalize the score. Buckley was active throughout, making multiple key saves, including attempts late in the game. The match concluded with a 1-1 draw, as both teams were unable to break the deadlock in the final minutes.
