LA JOLLA, Calif. – The UC Santa Barbara Women's Soccer team wraps up the regular season Thursday night as they head to UC San Diego for their final regular season contest. The Gauchos are coming off a 2-0 week as they defeated, at the time, conference leading CSUN before beating UC Riverside.
WHAT'S AT STAKE
With a win the Gauchos would become The Big West Regular Season Champions regardless of any other result in the conference. With a draw or loss the Gauchos could be seeded anywhere between the No. 2 seed to No. 5 seed. As the two-seed, UC Santa Barbara would get a bye into the semifinal round of The Big West Championships where they would play the winner of the No. 3 vs. No. 6 seed. As a three or four seed they would host a first round matchup and as the five seed, they would travel to No. 4 seed for the opening round.
ABOUT LAST WEEK
The Gauchos had a week to remember as they outscored their opponents 5-1 as they defeated CSUN 2-0 and UC Riverside 3-1 in their final regular season homestand. All five goals were scored by five different student-athletes.
SCOUTING THE TRITONS
UC San Diego comes into the regular season finale with a 4-6-8 overall record and posts a 2-3-4 record in Big West play. The Tritons do not have a chance in making the championships and will look to spoil the Gauchos chances of being the No. 1 seed.
The Tritons are led by redshirt freshman Ava Tibor who has scored six goals and dished out one assist. Tibor accounts for nearly 50 percent of all the Tritons goals this season. Natalie Abel is the only other Triton to score multiple goals on the season. The duo accounts for eight of the Tritons 13 goals.
In net, Charlotte Wilfert has started and played every minute of all 18 UC San Diego matches. She has posted 79 saves, a 0.89 goals against average, eight shutouts and a 0.832 save percentage. Wilfert's 79 saves rank first in The Big West along with her 4.39 saves per game.
