HONOLULU, Hawai'i (Oct. 31) – The UC Santa Barbara Men's and Women's Cross Country teams hit the ground running at the Big West Championships, hosted by the University of Hawaii. The Gauchos found their stride as they battled conference competition, putting their regular season success to the test on the island course. The men's squad finished fourth, with the women's team finishing sixth.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Zach Parker once again led his squad with a podium finish, placing third overall in a field of 78 conference finishers in a time of 24:23.5 on the 8k course. Manny Correia and Conrad Voigt were the next Gauchos to cross the line, clocking in 25:01 and 25:24.4 respectively. Parker Herbert and Niall Monteleone followed close behind, crossing the line at 25:41 and 25:47.0. Nate Osbourn with a time of 25:54.1 and Will Mulliken with 25:56.4 rounded out the scoring Guachos, all contributing to a 107 point fourth place team finish. In an impressive showing, the men's squad was able to climb up three places in the conference rankings.
On the women's side, Addie Oversmith crossed the line 6th individually out of 92 finishers, in a time of 21:28.9 on the 6k course. Jordin Lieberman and Isabel Ross followed close behind, finishing in 22:09.2 and 22:27.9. Sierra Gill clocked in 22:53.0, with Lexi Darley right behind with a 22:53.3. Ryann Strawn and Danielle Hollander finished out the scoring seven, finishing in 23:04.6 and 23:09.2 respectively, Four of the top five finishers for the Gauchos were freshmen, with all scorers contributing to their 152 point sixth place team finish, moving up two places in conference rankings.
After securing their bid to NCAA West Regionals, the Gauchos will head north to Sacramento, where they will compete on the Arcade Creek Cross Country Course on Nov. 14. The gun will go off at 9 am PT for the women's 6k, with the men's 8k following at 10 am PT. `
