Gauchos Set for First Road Test of Season

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – After going 2-0 during the opening week of the season, the Gauchos now head north to Sacramento for their first road test of the 2025-26 season. The Gauchos will face Sacramento State on Tuesday in their lone game of the week.

ABOUT LAST WEEK
The Gauchos opened the season with a win over San Francisco State for the second consecutive year. CJ Shaw and Zion Sensley led the way offensively to open the season as Sensley went off for a career-high 23 points while Shaw scored a freshman debut record of 20 points. Following the season opening win, the Gauchos went on to defeat San Jose State in a Saturday matinee matchup. At least four players scored in double-figures in both games.

SCOUTING THE HORNETS
Like the Gauchos, Sacramento State also opened the season 2-0, defeating Dominican and Jessup during opening week. This will be the first time since the 2017-18 season that the Gauchos have played Sac State in Sacramento and the first time since 2018-19 the two teams have matched up.

Offensively, the Hornets are averaging 94.5 point per game with four players averaging in double figures. Leading the way is sophomore Jayden Teat who is averaging 20 points per game. Prophet Johnson and Jeremiah are the next two highest scorers and both are averaging a double-doubled with 18.5 points and 10 rebounds and 16 points and 11 rebounds respectively.

The 2025-26 season marks the first season for Hornets Head Coach Mike Bibby. Bibby's roster is entirely made up of newcomers as the entire 14-man roster is new to Sacramento State this season. The Gauchos will be the final opponent in the Hornets season-opening three game homestand. Not only is the roster entirely new, the Hornets said so long to the Nest, their old home court and will move to The WELL on campus this season. The project has converted a portion of the The WELL, an on-campus fitness facility, into a venue for both the men's and women's basketball teams.
