LOS ANGELES — The No. 10 UC Santa Barbara Men's Water Polo team will want to spend as little time as possible dwelling on Saturday's 22-13 loss at No. 1 USC, but the Gauchos' record books will hold a memory of it regardless as
Brock Zamanian scored the 155
th, 156
th, 157
th, 158
th, 159
th and 160
th goals of his Santa Barbara career, making him the program's ninth-highest scorer of all time. With now 57 goals on the year, the redshirt senior also set a new single-season personal best.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The first and third quarters of Saturday's game effectively decided the result (and the margin), as the Gauchos hung within two goals of the Trojans in the second and matched them goal-for-goal in the fourth. It was 3-0 before
Camren Simoncelli scored Santa Barbara's first of the day and their only tally of the first quarter. The Trojans put together another 3-0 run before Zamanian scored his first of the day, in the second quarter. USC only got two in a row before Santa Barbara scored again, this time through
Landon Lassahn, but the hosts tallied with three seconds left in the half to make it 9-3 at the break.
The Trojans scored twice in a minute to start a third quarter that saw the teams combine for 11 goals, four of them Zamanian's. Over a span of two minutes, Zamanian doubled the output of the entire USC offense, but the hosts went on their fourth 3-0 run of the day to end the quarter and lead, 16-7, heading into the final eight minutes. They made it a 4-0 run to take a 10-goal edge right at the start of the final frame. It was one of six Trojan goals scored in the fourth quarter of Saturday's game, which the Gauchos answered with six of their own.
Charlie Johnson scored both the first and sixth of those, with Simoncelli and Zamanian each chipping in one.
Ryan McManigal scored on consecutive 6-on-5 opportunities late in the quarter as well.
