RENO, Nev. (Dec. 6) – Sophomore Mia Shepard represented the UCSB Women's Indoor Track team this weekend at the Silver State Invitational, hosted by the University of Nevada, Reno. The sophomore from Hawai'i not only opened up her indoor season, but broke two school indoor records in the process.
On the first day of competition, Shepard lined up for the 200m before clocking a blazing time of 24.09 to earn fourth overall out of a field of 72. The previous record, which was set by Mariana Lanz in 2023, fell as Shepard delivered the fastest 200m indoor time ever run in UC Santa Barbara history.
On Saturday, Shepard returned to the track for the 400m and delivered another record breaking performance, lowering Lanz's other 2023 school record to an impressive 52.93 in a second place overall finish.
Senior Finn Andrews ran unattached at the Silver State Invitational, competing in the 200m and 400m as well. Andrews clocked in a 21.56 in the 200m, finishing eighth overall. In the 400m, Andrews crossed the line at 47.54 for a first place overall finish.
This is just the beginning for Shepard, whose breakout sophomore season is already rewriting the program Indoor record books, and signaling national-level potential. Shepard and the rest of the UCSB Women's Indoor Track and Field team will return to the track in the new year for the UW Invitational, on January 30.
